About Kedarkantha Trek

The Kedarkantha Trek is celebrated as one of the finest summit treks in the Indian Himalayas, offering a unique blend of adventure and accessibility that attracts both novice and experienced trekkers. Rising to an elevation of 12,500 feet in the Govind Pashu Vihar National Park of Uttarakhand, this trek is cherished for its pristine beauty, varied landscapes, and panoramic mountain views that paint an unforgettable experience with every season. Kedarkantha is not merely a trek; it’s a journey through enchanting forests, traditional Himalayan villages, sweeping meadows, and ultimately to a dramatic snow-capped summit. The route is designed such that the thrill of summit climbing becomes accessible to beginners, and yet, the vistas and raw adventure draw back seasoned trekkers year after year. Unlike technical climbs that require special skills or equipment, Kedarkantha’s trail is well-marked, progressively challenging, and efficiently managed by reputable trekking organizations.

123 Starting from the quaint villages of Kotgaon, Sankri, or Gaichawan Gaon, trekkers pass through dense forests of pine, oak, and rhododendron. These forests, blanketed in snow during winter, create a fairytale setting. The lower stretches of the trail brim with natural beauty—frolicking streams, frozen lakes like Juda ka Talab, wildlife sightings, and a constant canopy of towering trees. Each campsite along the way unveils its own magic, from the peaceful countryside vibes at Kotgaon to the wide, starlit clearings of campsites like Khujaai, Bhoja Dhadi, and Julota.

After 8-9 hours of spectacular mountain views and riverside roads, you’ll arrive at Sankri, the charming base camp for your trek. Relax for the night in a comfortable Sankri hotel such as Swargarohini or The Grand Shiva, preparing for the journey ahead.

After breakfast, set out on foot from Sankri towards Juda Ka Talab, a mesmerizing high-altitude lake that often freezes in winter. The 5 km route takes 4-5 hours, weaving through dense forests and opening up to serene Himalayan vistas. Tonight, enjoy a cozy camp atmosphere, sharing tents on a twin or triple basis, immersed in the tranquility of the mountains.

Today’s trek takes you deeper into the wilderness, covering 3 km to reach the Kedarkantha Base Camp at an elevation of 10,498 feet. The trek, lasting 2-3 hours, rewards you with sweeping views of snow-draped peaks and open alpine meadows. After taking in the unforgettable 360-degree Himalayan panorama, retrace your steps back to base camp for lunch. The day continues as you descend to Hargaon Camp, totaling about 11 km of trekking over 7-8 exhilarating hours. Share stories with fellow trekkers as you unwind in your tent for the night.

On the final trekking day, make your way from Hargaon Camp to Sankri Market, a gentle downhill walk of 4.5 km taking 2-3 hours. Bid farewell to the mountains and board your vehicle for the return journey to Dehradun (approx. 190 km, 7-8 hours). You’ll be dropped at Dehradun Railway Station by 9:00-10:00 PM, carrying home lasting memories of your Himalayan adventure.

The Kedarkantha Trek welcomes adventure enthusiasts aged 10 and above, making it a great pick for families with teens, solo travelers, and groups. Most operators set a maximum age limit at 60, though seniors may be asked for a recent fitness certificate or medical clearance to guarantee safety.

Important: Minors (below 18) must trek with a parent or guardian, and participants above 58 are usually required to submit a treadmill (TMT) test and medical certificate.

While Kedarkantha is beginner-friendly, a moderate level of stamina and cardio fitness is essential. All trekkers should be free from heart, lung, or chronic joint conditions. Mandatory medical forms and health declarations safeguard each trekker, and you may be asked for recent test results (like ECG or TMT) if older than 58.

Start training 3-4 weeks before your trek:

Cardio Targets: Aim to walk or run 5 km in 35-40 minutes without excessive fatigue.

Stair Climbing: Climb 10 floors non-stop; repeat twice daily for endurance and leg strength.

Strength Routine: Incorporate squats, lunges, planks, and core exercises 2-3 times per week.
